We are off and running to our new school year and things are going well.  Students are adjusting back to school life and doing a great job.  I want to send an invite to everyone regarding our first annual Hall Of Fame.  The banquet will be on September 29th, at 7:00 pm in the basement of St. Anthony and Philip Parish.  Our inductees include Coaches Doc Shields and Butch McKeon.  Our athletes include Jim Meyers, Lisa Laufenberg-Soward, and John Hebgen.  I can't wait to attend what I hope to be a long tradition of recognizing these individuals. Stop in the office here at the school district and get your tickets.  $15.00 includes a wonderful meal catered by the Red Zone which includes beef, chicken, corn, potatoes, a roll, and dessert.  We will also have music as well as our speech's from our new inductee's.  I hope to see you all there.

I want to send a huge thank you to all of the community members and parents that helped with the Solo & Ensemble.  It was a great day and the kids were outstanding.  The music that our students was amazing.  The Cardinals have seven students who received star firsts.  These students will continue on at the state level.  Very Impressive everyone!!!!!

Thanks community for all the help........

A note of thanks to all our veterans who have served  and are serving to make our country the best in the world.  I am very proud of our student's performance in our Veterans Day Program.  The NHS, the band, and the choir did an excellent job again this year.  Thanks again everybody!!!!

I wanted to send a note of thanks for all the support for our football team this fall.  We traveled to Wildrose, for our first playoff game and had more fans there than the home team.  After the big win, on to Ithaca. The boys played a very good bulldog team.  Again we had an outstanding fan base.

Thanks everyone so much for supporting our boys of fall!!!!!!!!!!!

10-15-15

This is a big week for our Highland Cardinal Athletic teams.  Parents night on Thursday for the volleyball girls and Friday for the "Boys of Fall".  The team's are at the most important time of their season.  The girls will play at home next week against North Crawford in round one of their playoff season.  The boys need to win against Benton/Scales Mound for a chance at playoffs.  Exciting times for the kids.  Hope to see you at the games.......

I was very pleased with the kids last week during homecoming.  Other than a few glitches here and there, the kids did a great job.  Thanks to all the families and community for all your support for our kids.  We had a great showing at the parade and football game.  The skits were great.  The boys played their hearts out and beat a very good Cassville team.

Great job everybody!!!!!!!

Great job girls that sang the school song and won a t-shirt

The first five students to sing the school song at either homecoming skit night or football game will win my next prize.......

My winner from the last challenge is Connor Rusch,  the two students that won the bridge building competition were Jesse Bowen and Connor Rusch...

Who were the two students who won the competition for the bridge building contest at UW Platteville during the 14-15 school year.  These two individuals also beat the college engineering students with their outstanding design.

The first two students to give me the answer will receive a prize at our first home football game on September 4th vs. Potosi

Good Luck!!!!!!

August 2015

Dear Highland Students and Parents:

Welcome to the 2015-16 school year at Highland Community Schools.  We are looking forward to another exciting and productive year.  There are some exciting changes in and around our campus.  A greenhouse has been added just outside the Northeast part of the 6-12 building.  This will be an outstanding learning space for all of our students.  The agriculture department will also play a large role in its use.  Our Senior Exit Projects (SEP) and our Junior Projects will continue again this year.  I was very pleased with the work that our students completed last year and presented at our spring Creativity Fair.  Students will again be out and about in our community learning from local experts in many different fields of study.

The bell schedule will remain the same in our high school this year.  Our middle school will have a small change in the schedule.  We will be adding some time before middle school lunch for students who may need additional help with classes or finish school work.   Classes will run from 8:00 A.M. until 3:24 P.M.  We will again have resource hour at the middle and high school levels.  Students will each have a teacher mentor that they will see every day.  These teachers will assist with homework and answer any questions students may have.  We feel this is a successful intervention that allows students the opportunity to complete work and get assistance when needed.

Please make sure you read your student handbooks and pay special attention to the Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities.  It is so very important that there be clear expectations and consequences for behavior…and that district policies formally reinforce these expectations.  This code, formally endorsed by the Board of Education, aspires to assuring that all students (and parents) know that the Highland School District is both safe and stimulating learning environment.

Parents and students are encouraged to read and discuss this handbook.  Keep it handy so you can refer to it during the year as needed.  If you have any questions, please contact me at 929-4525.

Best wishes for a happy and productive year of learning in the Highland Community School District.

Sincerely,

Joshua J. Tarrell

District Principal
